A well known artist in Southwestern Virginia, Johnson grew up in Wythe County and received a Bachelor of Arts from Emory and Henry College where he studied under his friend and mentor, George Chavatel. After teaching art in the public schools in Marion,
Virginia for 30 years and painting at nights and on weekends, he retired in 2005 and now enjoys spending entire days producing art. Johnson works in a variety of media including oils, acrylics, watercolors, woodburnings and pen and ink drawings.
